On Northern Wings

The Story

Set in the 400-500AD period of historical China, tensions still remain between those of the central lands of the Jin Dynasty and the northern border of the Sixteen Kingdoms. Zhen Ying, a general of Eastern Jin, is awarded a fief for his military accomplishments. However, Zhen Ying knew in reality, the granting of the small territory of Shanjing in the far north was only a way to attempt to push him out. Zhen Ying was born to a well established father, who like him, served as a general. However, his mother had been a member of a small nomadic tribe from the Sixteen Kingdoms. Despite his skill and strength, in the eyes of the officials of the court and the other generals of the land, Zhen Ying was a black sheep. In only a few short years, Zhen Ying had established himself as a loved and revered lord by the people of Shanjing. Shanjing had been a dumping ground for the central lands: unwanted, elderly, orphaned, and sick were all sent there to spend their last days. Zhen Ying in turn worked tirelessly to make his people happy. Between deployments and military duties, Zhen Ying would often return to Shanjing to help with small unusual happenings. Upon his return, he is greeted by rumors of a ghoul haunting the northern forest, preventing the hunters from entering as they feared they’d be cursed.Zhen Ying heads out alone to investigate, and after a chaotic encounter, learns that ghoul is in-fact just a human. Lan Yuchen is a sickly man who was sent to Shanjing due to his weak constitution, secluding himself in the northern forest and almost never venturing into the village. His ghostly thin appearance, mixed with misunderstandings, made him the perpetrator of ghost-story! Despite the two’s opposite personalities and constant bickering, a strange friendship grows between Zhen Ying and Lan Yuchen.

The Ending

In the span of two years, Zhen Ying & Lan Yuchen’s bond grows. Despite his ailing body, Lan Yuchen finds himself full of energy when at Zhen Ying’s side. As the line between friendship and something more starts to blur for them, they are caught in a torrent of uneasy emotions. Zhen Ying doesn’t understand his feelings, and as more and more turmoil springs up between the states of Jin and the north, the two of them spend less and less time together. Yi Cheng, Zhen Ying’s second in command, insists that Zhen Ying stops returning to Shanjing and stays in the capital to continue his duties as a general. Lan Yuchen, who can feel what little time he has left is waning, struggles to convey what he feels for Zhen Ying. Before the two can figure out their emotions, Zhen Ying is suddenly accused of betraying Eastern Jin. In a twisted political plot, he struggles to prove his innocence, and in his struggle becomes unaware of the movements of the Wu Clan. The Wu clan, having a blood-feud against the Xiongnu tribes from centuries ago, set their sights on the destruction of Zhen Ying. They target his weakness, Shanjing. Trapped hundreds of miles apart, with no way of communicating, Zhen Ying and Lan Yuchen must fight their own battles to protect what and who they love.In the end, pushed into a corner by the Wu army and wanting to survive, the people of Shanjing turn on their lord. Lan Yuchen attempts to quell their anger, and in an act to protect the land Zhen Ying loves, is killed. Zhen Ying defies all odds and makes it back to Shanjing after a grueling journey across the land…however he is too late. His skills in solving the unsolvable earn him a reputation and rumors, but the man himself is a mystery.Wensu Xiang, a divine beast granted an immortal form, had always wondered about these rumors but never bothered with them much. As a subordinate to the Minister of Merits, he had his hands full with paperwork and tasks. But his peaceful life changes when he is told to work as a temporary assistant to the Magistrate Immortal. Instead of finding the noble immortal of the rumors, Wensu Xiang finds himself pulled along by a rowdy, loud, and unrefined man named Zhen Mengxun.Although Zhen Mengxun is the Magistrate Immortal, he is not what the rumors say, and his antics pull the two of them deep into the hidden secrets of the Heavenly Realm. Zhen Mengxun couldn’t be farther from refined, his unnatural strength and impulsiveness always cause more chaos during their investigations. However, he is every bit the genius the rumors say. As the two solve cases and grow closer, they find themselves revealing an unexpected dark underbelly of the Heavenly Realm. When a heavenly official who strongly advocated for Zhen Mengxun’s removal as the magistrate ends up dead, shock and horror twist through the realm.
Zhen Mengxun, the only one who’d ever spoke of the theory of how to destroy an immortal’s soul, is seen as the prime suspect and imprisoned. Left without him, Wensu Xiang does everything he can to use the skills he’d learned from their partnership and prove Zhen Mengxun’s innocence.
After proving Zhen Mengxun’s innocence, the two of them reunite. During his time imprisoned, Zhen Mengxun found himself tormented by nightmares and strange dreams that seemed almost like memories. When he reunites with Wensu Xiang, they start to subside. Despite saving Zhen Mengxun, the true culprit remained elusive to the Heavenly Realm. Worried about the odd dreams, Zhen Mengxun seeks out the help of Bai Wanyu, an ancient immortal who answers only to the Heavenly Emperor. Bai Wanyu reveals that Wensu Xiang and Zhen Mengxun share a twisted and complex fate, and that they should push forward to find the truth.

The Ending

Their peace is short lived, and before they can get to the bottom of the strange dreams, Wensu Xiang goes missing. Using the full skills of his title as the Magistrate Immortal, Zhen Mengxun easily tracks down the culprit to the kidnapping. A martial god named Yi Cheng. Yi Cheng was one of the most formidable martial gods in the heavenly realm, and had always been one to advocate for Zhen Mengxun to become a martial god instead of wasting his time. Yi Cheng reveals that he’d been the one who killed the official who’d slandered Zhen Mengxun, and after he’d learned a shocking secret about Wensu Xiang,he was determined to destroy him too. Having leaked false information to the Ghost Realm that eating the soul of a divine beast would grant them ascendence, Yi Cheng orchestrated the kidnapping. The more Yi Cheng confronts Zhen Menxun, the more memories come back to him. In a shocking twist, Yi Cheng reveals himself as the second in command to General Zhen Ying…Zhen Mengxun’s true identity. Zhen Ying’s tormented ending in his mortal life had been in truth, at the hands of the Heavenly Emperor, who wanted his power for the heavenly realm. However, the newly ascended Zhen Ying was still steeped in resentment, and lost his mind. In order to control him, the Heavenly Emperor sealed his memories, and instead gave him the identity of Zhen Mengxun. The seal was Wensu Xiang…a fusion of a Jade Horse seal and the fragmented soul and appearance of Zhen Ying’s beloved Lan Yuchen. Hearing the truth causes the seal to break, and sends Zhen Mengxun into a rampage as his mind falters back to the state of ‘Zhen Ying.’‘Zhen Ying’, enraged, nearly destroys the Heavenly Realm and the Ghost Realm in search of Wensu Xiang. But when he finds him, he is too lost to his memories to recognize him. Only seeing as ‘Lan Yuchen’, ‘Zhen Ying’ attempts to kill their closest friends in order to “protect Lan Yuchen”. But Wensu Xiang is his own being, despite having the face and fragments of Lan Yuchen. Blaming Yi Cheng, ‘Zhen Ying’ attacks him in an attempt to kill him. Wanting to prevent ‘Zhen Ying’ from destroying a bond he’d cherished, Wensu Xiang steps in front of Yi Cheng. Taking a hit from ‘Zhen Ying’ nearly shatters him, and leaves him gravely wounded. As the seal is nearly broken, Lan Yuchen's soul is able to convey his true lost feelings for Zhen Ying, allowing Zhen Ying's resentment to recede. Having realized what he’s done, Zhen Mengxun regains himself.Although Wensu Xiang survives, he's greatly weakened. Yi Cheng is not punished as to not reveal a weakness in the Heavenly Realm, and is stripped of his title as a martial god and sent to work under Bai Wanyu in confinement. With the seal no longer as powerful, both Zhen Mengxun and Wensu Xiang begin the long road to recovery and understanding each other more.
